The question has been raised...how much nursing should I plan for? Again, my answer is an unqualified..."it depends!"

You'll have a nurse with you from the time you are in recovery till you get out of the hospital. That's a given. What varies is how long you'll want a nurse when you get back to the hotel. Here are a couple things to consider:
It's a good idea to budget for more than what you think you'll need.
You can always get more (or less) nursing shifts when you see how your healing is progressing.

What are some of the factors that would go into your estimate?
*Are you going alone? Nurses not only help you medically, then can prepare food for you, help you use the toilet and change positions, reach things, and generally make you more comfortable.
*How many procedures are you having done? The more owies you have, the more help you might need.
*Are you having face work done around your eyes? It may be hard to see for several hours to a couple of days...
*How have you recovered from other surgical procedures? Are you generally flat down for a while? Up and raring to go? Your recovery will likely be similar. Those who've had a hard time or complications with other surgeries may be laid low longer than others.

People who have the "standard" lower body makeover (LBL, mons, inner thighs, lipo) have needed nursing from zippo nothing to a full week. It just depends!

When I had my first trip with a lot of muscle work done (extended abdominoplasty with anchor incision, breast lift and implants) I HURT pretty good for the first few days. I had my mom with me, though, and didn't have any additional nursing once I got out of the hospital.
My second trip, I had more lower stuff done (LBL, mons, thighs) and I shared a two bedroom unit with another patient. Because our surgeries were staggered, we were basically able to help each other although I believe we had a nurse a couple of different times when one or the other of us just got out.

There are people at the mall 4 days after surgery. There are people who don't leave their room for 10 days except to Dr. Fabio's. Same surgery, different person.

I'd like to see others chime in here...we're here to help each other and while Wanda's at ASBS I wanted to start addressing this thread. You'll notice her post in another forum that notes you can adjust to fit your needs once you are in Brazil, but it's best to be prepared.

I wanted to thank everyone for their responses to my question about nursing care on another thread. Becki, I think its a great idea to start this new thread, and continue the discussion. From what I've heard so far, it sounds lfike I should plan on two full days after I leave the hospital and take it from there. Its so great to have everyone's support as I prepare for this exciting and somewhat scarey part of the whole transformational journey.

Hugs,
Vanessa

Yes, Vanessa, I think that's wise. Did you say you're having eye work? That's an especially good idea to prepare for the nursing then. They can be helpful in so many ways!
