Did many of you carry huge amounts of cash on you as you traveled? Did you feel safe or do you think it would be wise to wire funds? How did you carry the cash? I'm considering a money belt or sewing it into clothes/undergarments, etc. Did you claim it at customs? If so, did you actually have to get it out and show it or just tell them you had it? There is no tax, right?

Whistle "I took money in a money belt(cotton money belt from Office Max) and credit card. No I did not have to show my money to anyone. There is a safe in the hotel for safe keeping. Also, you can pay Dr Fabio the first day and you won't have to worry with that money. Sharon in TN--God is my pilot!Dancing Dancing Dancing

Amy,
I just got an email from a patient who has just arrived safely. She declared her cash and had no problems whatsoever entering Brazil.

She came from Canada and on her way had to go through USA customs, she declared and also got chosen as random search "victim"... she had hassle in USA, but it came out fine.

I will ask her to come post here, her surgery is tomorrow... not sure she will have time to post today.

I am happy to hear a report of someone declaring cash and knowing that it is no problem... much safer to declare in my opinion, no chance of breaking the law and having money taken away... I know most people just walk through with the money... but it may not be so wise to do so.

Brazil Custom Info

There is NO tax on the money, from the link above:

Quote:
Bringing money into Brazil

I will be traveling to Brazil and plan to take money (i.e. in cash, checks and/or traveler’s checks) with me. What is the limit and will I have to pay taxes?

There is no limit on the amount of money a traveler (Brazilian citizen or foreign national) can bring into Brazil. If a traveler is carrying a total of R$ 10,000 (ten thousand reais) or more, whether in cash, checks or traveler’s check, in reais, dollars or other foreign currencies, it is required to present the Currency Carry-on Electronic Declaration (e-CCD) through the web.

This declaration is only for registration purposes, not for taxation.

I really do not think you have to do the electronic pre-declaration, just declare it on the form you fill out on the plane. However, click on the link above and follow the links, to get an you an idea of what they would ask if they ask anything.

According to our patient, they only asked her if she spoke English and if she was a tourist... that was it.

Thanks Mrs. Wanda. Yep, I don't want to take any chances trying to be sneaky. It makes me nervous. Smile

Hi Amy,

My name is Anastasia. I did indeed declare 20,000 dollars with U.S customs and with Brazilian customs. I declared it with the forms provided to me on my flights.

I only had an issue at U.S customs. When I gave them my decleration form, two people were called and I was taken to a customs area. There they searched my carry on luggage and ran my checked luggage through the security conveyer(whatever that's called - lol). They asked a lot of questions and sent me on my way. At security I was picked for a random check and had to go to a private room to show the security card that bulge under my clothes was only money, and nothing illegal. I was little nervous but it was okay.

Brazilian customs was easy! I went through customs in Rio. Honest truth I was only asked two questions upon handing them my customs form. The customs form asks you if you are carring more that 10,000 Reias and you have to check yes or no. The two questions I was asked: do you speak English? and are you a tourist? I answered yes to both and he sent me on my way. I had good laugh with my mom once we left the customs area.

I hope my experience will help you out. Best wishes to you.

Take Care

Amy,
Thanks for noticing... I am seriously up early and working... and usually try to close down around dinner time... sometimes back to work.

this data recovery has only added to my hours/stress.

Don't worry I am dedicated to helping patients as top priority.

Hugs,
Wanda

I took LOTS of cash in a money belt thing that I wore around my neck, threaded down through my clothes and into my panties. I was "nervous" about it but had no probs whatsoever. I gave money to Dr. Fabio as soon as I got there -- well, the next day since I arrived at night. I know it's "sneaky" but I was also scared to declare it. I'd do it this way again if I were going back.

For me, it was a toss up between being "sneaky" or going through the hassles of govm't agencies. After all, it's drug smuggelers they're looking for, or people trying to launder money by placing the cash in banks abroad. And knowing the experience of many others who had traveled before me, I opted to be "sneaky".

The only concern I have about not declaring it is I'm afraid of the problems I'd have IF they found it on me and I hadn't declared it.
